Three Reasons People Don't Change

Author: Don Scott May 06, 2026

Most people know what they want. They just haven’t gotten around to it yet. There’s always a reason.

This is part of Thomas’s story. If you missed where it started, catch up here.

Thomas knew something was missing. That he was called past where he was. That had been hanging out with him for a few years by the time we met. Nothing was happening. He was living his life, running his business. Busy.

Thomas hadn’t gotten to the work of sorting out his next chapter for several reasons. I’ll give them in reverse order of negative impact. I’ll then come back and break each one down a bit.
Reason #3 – He was busy. He had a full-time life and job/ business now.
Reason #2 – He didn’t know how. Didn’t have a plan. Didn’t have a clear idea of where he wanted to go. Didn’t know how to get there.
Reason #1 – Not enough pain. Nothing was broken. There was no deadline. His life was good. A fraction of what it was about to become. But it wasn’t broken.

Reason #3 – Too busy. I hear this so much, and it’s mostly misguided. Sure, everyone’s busy. What is it Warren Buffett is quoted as saying? “Busy is the new stupid.” I meet people who are too busy to allow me to help them stop being too busy. It’s almost comical.

But it’s not. Its habits and beliefs. It’s the circumstances the person has created. IT’S THE LIMITING BELIEF THAT IT CAN’T BE DIFFERENT THAN IT IS. Contrast that with the belief that you can create anything you want. You just have to make a decision, get some help, and figure out how. If you decide and commit to being slowed-down, you can figure out how. If you can come to believe you really can create more by slowing down, then you’ll have the justification.

If you’re too busy to do the things you need to do to have the things you say you want. In your business, money, experience of life, and all the rest. Just know the cost.

It’s costing you a lot of money. It’s costing you your life.

We’ll get to Reasons #1 and #2 next time. But being busy is the one that stops people before they even start.

For now, do this: Sit and contemplate where and how much you are “too busy!” What’s that costing you? If you’ll take this seriously, this one realization has the power to change your life.

Where are you saying yes to things less important at the cost of those more important? How’s your health and fitness? How’s your peace? What about the next big dream? Are you creating it or waiting around?
