Newsletter #15: Creating Your Ideal Job

Author: Don Scott January 13, 2026

What if you were to create a pie chart of how you experience your job/ career? Isolate that particular hat for a moment. You probably wear a lot of hats: owner, family, employee, executive, perhaps others. Focus solely on the employee/ executive role. Consider a week, you have to bring in the weekends and evenings, to the extent you’re working or seriously thinking about work.

How do you experience your job? That is to say, how do you feel? And don’t just hop to how much you love your job overall. I used to love Arthur Andersen. I was proud of the firm and of being a partner in the firm. I could say I loved being a partner, loved my job. And a good deal of it was awful!

And you could also say something like: “Well, of course there is a lot of hard work. You have to take the good with the bad.” And so forth. That is answering a different question than the one I am asking. Consider a pie chart representing your experience of your job. That what we’re looking for.

Untitled design (3)
  • Bliss – Joy, I’m sitting in my office and it’s just so good I can’t stand it.
  • Fun – Doing things I truly enjoy, glad to be doing that thing, in that moment.
  • OK – Fairly neutral. Don’t love it. Don’t hate it.
  • Work – Doing it because I must. I’d much rather be doing something else.
  • Agony – How did I ever get myself here?

We aren’t judging it or explaining it. Be your own neutral observer, as much as you can. Let’s break down your experience.
Think about it. Assuming you haven’t sold or retired. Your job/ career, the time and energy you spend in it. Once you take out sleeping, brushing your teeth, taking the car in for an oil change, and all the rest. That job is over half of what’s left.
Do this:
  1. Find a little quiet time and draw your pie chart.
  2. What does it tell you?

We’ll take a next step or two with this in upcoming newsletters. This is a big deal because it’s so much of your life.
