How to Create Change #16: Demonstrated – You’ll want to read this!

Author: Don Scott January 20, 2026

I worked with a great client several years ago who was a partner in one of the global consulting firms. We’ll call him Dennis. There is so much gold in here, and I hope you can find it for yourself.

Like you, Dennis has a great life, family, all the rest. When he called me and we had that first conversation, he shared this:

I love my job, love my firm, love my clients. Proud of what I’ve done and where I am.
Do not want to leave the firm. I’m 50 years old and I just can’t do this for another 10 years!

He engaged me for six months of coaching. We spent our first session with him telling me about how he grew up. Dennis talked, I asked questions. By the time we had finished, he was clear on the conversations he’d been having with himself. The programming that had been running him for those 50 years! It had been creating a certain set of outcomes, some of which were wanted. Some very much unwanted.

SOME OF HIS INTERNAL PROGRAMMING WAS CRUSHING HIM. TAKING LIFE AWAY FROM OTHER IMPORTANT AREAS.

Sidebar – I want to pause here and broaden this up. I’m in conversations, writing, serving, all the time trying to help people stop and look at the things they want. To look at what’s not working. Dennis didn’t develop this thing of life sucking crush the day we met. That had been there, building for decades.

The example applies everywhere to everyone. We have pain, unfulfilled wants and needs, want more time with the family, tired of being exhausted, whatever. We carry these things around, and don’t do anything about them. They’re so familiar, they are just part of the landscape.

It’s just such a stark comparison between the before and after. The difference once someone has done the work I teach them to do. The process, the ongoing practice. So, if you can hear me. With regards to your job and every other major component of your life. Stop and open up. Dream big. What do you want it to be? Feel what that would feel like!!!!

Back to the story – Here’s someone who got the message. It was heavy enough that when I showed up on the scene it jumped right out there, and he decided to see if he could make it better. That took a little leap of faith, sure.

Let’s cut it off here and pick up the story and analysis with the next newsletter. Meanwhile…

Do this:
  1. Put yourself in the story I’ve started. Your version of it. Can you see how that is also you, and that you have things you need to fix, create, have more of, have less of, be better at?
  2. What are those things that if you had them would change your whole world?
